The Museum Rietberg Zurich – Researching Chinese Bronzes in Switzerland

Dr. CHENG Yu, 2020/2021 J. S. Lee Memorial Fellow, who is a recent graduate from the Oxford University, spent 12 months at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, Switzerland with the guidance from her supervisor Ms. Alexandra von Przychowski, Curator at the Museum Rietberg. Ms. von Przychowski will introduce Museum Rietberg and its collection and Dr. Cheng will share on her research outcome on the Museum’s bronze collection and at the Fellowship Talk.

Ms. Alexandra von Przychowski
Curator of Chinese Art and the Himalayan Region, Museum Rietberg

Ms. Alexandra von Przychowski studied East Asian Art History and Sinology in Germany and China. She started working at the Museum Rietberg as an Exhibition Assistant in 1997 and she overseen the fields of China and the Art of the Himalayan Region since 1998. Her research interest ranges from Chinese ceramics, calligraphy, painting, and Buddhist art from Bhutan, to symbols of propaganda of the Cultural Revolution.

2020/2021 J. S. Lee Memorial Fellow

Dr. Cheng Yu received her D.Phil. in 2019 from the School of Archaeology, The University of Oxford. She specializes in the archaeology of Bronze Age China, more specifically from the Erlitou period to the Western Zhou dynasty (1850-771 B.C.). In her dissertation, she explores the formation and development of the Zhou identity during the early Western Zhou period, by examining a wide range of excavated materials including bronze ritual vessels, bronze weapons and ceramics.
