Fellowship Project

Dr. He Jianfei spent twelve months at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada where she gained curatorial experience and studied the museum’s textile and ethnographic material culture collections. She expanded the scope of her research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Royal Ontario Museum. Her extensive and in-depth knowledge of Chinese bronze mirrors won her the James Menzies Chinese Research Fund, which enabled her to extend her research and museum practice at the museum as a guest curator.

While working at the Royal Ontario Museum, an encyclopaedic museum that is home to one of the largest Asian collections outside Asia, she deepened her cross-cultural understanding through studying the museum’s wide-ranging collection of artworks and objects from all eras and regions of Asia, broadening her horizons beyond her field of expertise and gaining an all-encompassing view of Chinese art, even Asian Art. Working collectively and directly with many knowledgeable experts at the museum fuelled in her an intense desire to explore ways to facilitate understanding of the Chinese arts within the western community.

Biography

Dr. He Jianfei received her Ph. D. degree in historical anthropology from the Department of History at the Sun Yat-sen University in 2013. Her research field covers ancient Chinese bronze mirrors as well as the embroidery, textile and cultural heritage management in Southwest China and Southeast Asia. She is currently a Director of Chinese Art and Culture at the Bei Shan Tang Foundation.

Recent Development and Achievement

    As a Director of Chinese Art and Culture of the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, Dr. He Jianfei continues to contribute to the incubation of young talent in the field of Chinese art and culture through co-directing the flagship J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme, Forum for Curators of Chinese Art and other sponsorship programmes.
