Fellowship Project

Dr. Diana YANG will spend six months (May 2027-November 2027) at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where she will conduct research on early modern Chinese and Japanese trade ceramics. In partnership with the Cambridge-based curatorial professionals and academic staff, she will enhance and update the catalog of the Museum’s premodern Asian ceramics and further make these resources easily accessible. In addition, the project aims to build professional networks in the U.K. to support potential future collaborative curatorial initiatives on global Chinese ceramic design and trade.

Biography

Dr. Diana YANG is currently Lecturer of Asian Art and Material Culture at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City. She is a historian of global Asian decorative arts and material culture who specialises in ceramics, with a particular focus on East Asian and Southeast Asian pottery and its circulation from the late medieval to early modern periods. Her decade-long research recovers the glory of trade ceramics for diverse Asian markets through case studies of southern Fujianese and Japanese ceramics. In her academic and curatorial endeavours across the Pacific, Dr. Yang is dedicated to facilitating cross-cultural communication by advancing interdisciplinary study on border-crossing communities and their artworks. She has also developed scholarly interests in contemporary design and crafts from the Greater Asia and Asian diasporic artists.
