Fellowship Project
Ms. MAN Tsz Yan, Chelsea will visit the Palace Museum in Beijing, China, for four months (September 2025 – January 2026) to study the knowledge, techniques, and standards in preventive conservation from the museum’s Conservation Department. This includes but is not limited to studying mould sampling and identification techniques, as well as exploring innovative energy-efficient solutions for maintaining a stable storage environment for collections. She will conduct a comparative study on the differences in climate between Beijing and Hong Kong, alongside conservation practices between museums in the two cities. Additionally, she will delve into the application of sustainable solutions for maintaining storage environment in the future Heritage Conservation and Resource Centre in Hong Kong, facilitating experience and knowledge exchange and collaborative development between the Department of Conservation Science of the Palace Museum and the Conservation Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (the “LCSD”), in preventive conservation.
Biography
Ms. MAN Tsz Yan, Chelsea graduated from the University of Hong Kong majoring in Architectural Conservation, and obtained a master’s degree in Conservation from University College London. She is currently a conservator at the Conservation Office of the LCSD, responsible for conservation treatment and preventive conservation for collections, as well as conducting scientific analysis and research on collections and treatment materials. In addition, she is dedicated to enhancing public awareness and interest in heritage conservation, and actively participates in education and extension programmes such as guided tours in conservation laboratories and workshops.
Recent Development and Achievement
Recently, Ms. Man has participated in and completed a systematic investigation and research of all museum collection stores under the LCSD. This includes collecting and analysing environmental data from collection stores, evaluating the performance of the stores in various aspects of preventive conservation, and providing and implementing recommendations to improve and optimise the storage environment for collections. In addition, she eagerly participates in supporting the planning and development for the new Heritage Conservation and Resource Centre in Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong.
