Fellowship Project
Dr. Liu will visit the Art Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong for 6 months (September 2025 – March 2026) to undertake research on the diaries and letters of Ma Jian archived within the museum. Furthermore, he will be responsible for cataloging the collection donated by Jian Youwen.
Biography
Dr. Liu Xiangchun received his doctorate in literature from Fudan University in 2005 before joining the Shanghai Museum to work on the compilation and research of ancient books. He has been a Research Curator at Shanghai Museum since 2014, and is currently Member of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Cultural Relics; Member of the professional committee under the Ancient Books Preservation and Conservation Center in Shanghai; a council member of the Chinese Indexing Society; an expert member at the cultural relics appraisal committee of the China Maritime Museum; a visiting tutor at Wenbo Academy of East China University of Political Science and Law; and a researcher at the Traditional Chinese Painting Research Center of Beijing Fine Art Academy.
Recent Development and Achievement
Dr. Liu has long been engaged in the study of Chinese classical literature, the academic history of China during Qing Dynasty and the Republican era, the cataloging of ancient books, and archiving. In recent years, he has mainly devoted himself to the study of modern scholars’ letters and Jiangnan culture, having participated in several exhibitions, and has been engaged in the study of Xu Senyu, the noted cultural and museum scholar in the older generation China, for nearly 20 years. He is currently compiling the Xu Senyu Chronicle (《徐森玉年譜長編》; Xu Senyu nianpu changbian).
Constantly concerning the dispersal of cultural relics in Hong Kong, Dr. Liu is going to publish a collection of related research papers. In addition, he has been committed to the study of Jiangnan culture for many years, compiling Yuhuatang Diaries (《玉華堂日記》; Yuhuatang riji; published by Zhonghua Book Company), and will publish Collection of Essays of Shanghai Former Sages (《滬籍前賢文集經眼錄》; huji qianxian wenji jingyanlu).
